Can Blondes and Redheads get Laser Hair Removal?

The answer is really, only on facial hair, with a system called Medilase.

This has been a cause of much controversy and argument in the laser hair removal business. The main reason it’s a source of concern is because of the way lasers work.

Why Lasers Work on Brown Pigment

A laser targets the brown colour, melanin, in the base of the hair follicle and hair bulb. This target selectively absorbs the laser energy, and heats up so much that it damages the follicle so hair won’t grow properly anymore.

Red hair and blonde hair both have a biological lack of brown pigment. This meant it was difficult for lasers to detect and therefore treat.

When laser hair removal was first developed in the mid-90s, the only candidates for treatment were dark-haired, light-skinned patients. Today’s lasers are much more advanced; and Thérapie Clinic uses a selection of medical grade laser that are safe and effective.

All laser hair removal technology uses light and/or heat energy, which is absorbed by hair pigments, to disable unwanted hair follicles below the skin’s surface. The method and mechanics of how these lasers accomplish this task is where the differences in lasers lie.

Blonde, Red and Grey Hairs have no Pigment for Lasers to Target

It’s much more difficult to remove blonde, red or grey hairs with a laser, because there simply isn’t anything for the laser to find. No pigment to target means that laser treatment is not really effective on the body.

Use Medilase on Facial Hair Instead

However, the Medilase System used by Thérapie Clinic can address course facial hair in blondes and redheads, even grey ones, as it works differently to a laser.

Medilase is an infra-red type system which uses an ultrasonic head to direct acoustic energy at the hair shaft and root, heating up the root to the point where it damages regrowth.

It can work effectively on small areas of the face, and is safe for such delicate skin, but blondes and redheads should chat to their Therapy specialist about waxing as an alternative to be hair-free this summer.

This is just one of the reasons Thérapie Clinic offer free consultations to their clients; you can discover all the facts upfront and get correct recommendations for your hair colour and skin type.
