Reduce Appearance of Stretch Marks at Thérapie Clinic
Stretch marks, medically known as striae distensae, are very common in both men and women-but it’s usually the ladies who suffer most.
Stretch Marks and when they Appear
They appear initially as, striations of a pink or purplish colour. They are mainly associated with rapid changes in body weight for one reason or another, as well as growth spurts in younger males.
Rapid hormonal changes are also a cause, so stretch marks can appear during puberty, pregnancy or even with some medical conditions.
If you saw them under a microscope, stretch marks look like scar tissue, and they are traditionally difficult to get rid of, even though there are many products on the market claiming to do so.
Why Stretch Marks Form
Stretch marks may occur during various phases of life but may be related to increased cortisol (a hormone produced by the adrenal glands) secretion or increased body mass. The most common cause of stretch marks is pregnancy, and pregnancy-associated stretch marks are medically known as striae gravidarum.
Weight gain and loss is a very common cause for stretch marks in women, and most of us have a few on our bellies and hips. Taking some medications, such as corticosteroids like prednisone, may also produce stretch marks.
Older Marks turn Silver
Stretch marks have a characteristic visual appearance no matter when they appear or what the cause; initially visible as raised pink to purple lines longitudinally arranged over the abdomen, lateral upper thighs, inner arms, or upper breasts.
As they get older they become silvery and even harder to get rid of; the purplish-pink scars are termed striae rubra, while the silvery lines are termed striae albae.
Call them what you will; they can make you feel very self-conscious about shedding your clothes.
Effective Treatment at Thérapie Clinic.
The most effective treatment to date is medical micro-needling, available as part of the Body Treatment list at Thérapie Clinic. Constantly keeping the skin well hydrated and moisturised will help, as does massage for overall skin health, but the mechanical action of micro needling actually produces new collagen which is what will make the real difference in minimising the appearance of the marks.
How Micro Needling works on Stretch Marks
Micro needling works by puncturing tiny channels in the dermis, stimulating the body’s natural defences to repair and produce concentrated amounts of collagen and proteins to the treated areas of skin.
This results in the skin’s thickness increasing by up to 80%; the fresh collagen helping to smooth scars and visibly reduces the appearance of stretch marks.
