Rosacea 101: What It Is and How To Treat It

One in 10 people in Ireland are affected by Rosacea, a chronic condition which usually occurs on the face and predominantly affects fair-skinned people (hence the aforementioned statistic) and those between the ages of 30 and 50. Both women and men suffer from it, and while it tends to be more common in women, it is usually more severe in men. However, there are treatments available that can help reduce the signs and give a fresh and natural looking face.

Symptoms

Rosacea, which is known to be quite severe and unpredictable at times, can impact the sufferer’s quality of life, is a recurring condition and tends to affect the face – namely the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin areas. Possible signs and symptoms include:

  • Persistent redness
  • Dilated blood vessels on the face
  • Flushing
  • A constant blushing appearance
  • Small red bumps or spots
  • Irritation around the eye area
  • Thickening of the skin

Causes

The cause of rosacea is unknown but there are certain things that have been identified as possible sources including blood vessel abnormalities, insect bites and genetics.

Health experts have also identified various triggers, conditions or actions that have been identified as factors that may make symptoms worse, such as:

  • Extreme conditions (hot and cold)
  • Stress
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Spicy foods
  • Vigorous exercise
  • Caffeine

Treatments

Rosacea has a number of sub-types, defined by the severity of symptoms, which require different treatment plans or medications (please note that in the majority of cases, medication effectively tackles the symptoms of rosacea).

In terms of treatments, your skin type will determine which treatment is most suitable for you and all treatments aim to:

  • Soothe and calm sensitive areas
  • Target sensitive, inflamed skin
  • Eliminate rosacea flare-ups
  • Plump and hydrate the skin

While there is no definitive cure, the following treatments, available at Thérapie Clinic, are designed to treat and reduce the signs of rosacea:

IPL Treatment
