Precautions you should take before getting laser hair removal at our UK clinics

Laser Hair Removal in the UK
Laser hair removal in the UK has grown in popularity, in part because of celebrities such as Kim Kardashian sharing that it’s a part of their beauty routine. However, many people don’t realise that there are certain precautions you need to take before receiving the treatment. While we always check during the pre-consultation, it’s handy for you to know well in advance as some of these things require preparing a few weeks ahead.

Ditch the tan
Due to the way the laser technology works, it is best to avoid tanning for 4-6 weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. Having a tan can reduce the effectiveness of the procedure. For this reason, autumn and winter are the perfect time of year to start your treatments.

It’s also worth noting that you should avoid using fake tan too. Put those creams and sprays aside for now – remember, laser hair removal is permanent, so it won’t be long before you can return to the tan!

Stick to the razor
Laser hair removal works by targeting the root of the hair. However, some hair removal processes, such as waxing and plucking, work at the root level. This then reduces the effectiveness of the laser treatment.

To ensure this doesn’t happen, avoid waxing or plucking for 4-6 weeks before your appointment. Instead, just grab a razor and shave. The advice is the same for in between treatments. Laser hair removal is permanent, but it tends to take a course of treatments. Stick to the razor to ensure you maximise the effectiveness of the laser hair removal.

Go hairless

Before having laser hair removal, it's essential to make sure the area to be treated is free from hairs whether this is the underarm area, legs or anywhere else

When you go for a wax treatment, you need to attend with some hair growth. Many people are surprised that the opposite is required for laser hair removal. You will need to have removed the hair before you can receive your treatment. Hair being present in the area to be present can risk thermal injuries from the laser.

Don’t worry, though, we always check during the pre-treatment consultation, and we can quickly sort any issues if needed. As mentioned above, you should avoid waxing and instead shave with a razor. This is best done the day or night before your appointment.

Clean the area
Before having your laser hair removal treatment, it’s a good idea to clean the area to be treated to remove any natural oils. This, again, will help to improve the effectiveness of your treatment.
