Why Do I Need Several Laser Hair Removal Sessions?

Laser Hair removal sessions are the best way to get rid of unwanted hair, and ifs often permanent. People sometimes wonder why it is that they have to have a course of treatments; why one session with a laser isn’t enough.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser Hair removal is a cumulative process; a progressive treatment that has more impact each time you have it done. The cycle of growth of the hair itself is also involved, as well as the variation in hair type. There’s no way of telling exactly what phase the hair is in, so having several laser hair treatments will ensure that the hair removal is effective as it will cover the most important phase at some point.

The Cycles of Hair Growth

Under normal circumstances hair growth in each hair follicle occurs in a cycle. There are three main phases of the hair growth cycle: anagen, catagen and telogen.

Anagen

Anagen is the growth phase, when the hair fibre itself is produced. It’s during this anagen growth phase that the hair contains an abundance of melanin, the pigment which gives your hair its colour. This is the phase during which laser hair removal treatment is most effective.

Catagen

The Catagen phase is a period of controlled regression for the hair follicle. During this phase the lower part of the hair stops growing, but it doesn’t shed, and the follicle gets reabsorbed into the skin. Laser Hair removal doesn’t really work when the hair is in this cycle.

Telogen

Telogen is the last phase of the hair growth cycle, and it’s a resting phase during which the old hair falls out before preparation for the development of a new anagen hair. Obviously, you can’t get lasting results with treatment performed solely in this phase.
